One of the joys of Fair Isle knitting and hand-dyeing is getting and using a range of shades of the same colour. I find these shade blends particularly restful and you can create quite sophisticated colourwork designs by combining them, blending from dark to light.

At the bottom of the image four very different brightly-coloured squares of woollen fabric are jumping out in contrast](https://static.wixstatic.com/media/eae1e6_ba745a1c29d54ad88b89c2b7f88508af~mv2.jpg/v1/fill/w_980,h_1027,al_c,q_85,usm_0.66_1.00_0.01,enc_auto/eae1e6_ba745a1c29d54ad88b89c2b7f88508af~mv2.jpg)
But, don't be fooled that plant-dyeing is all just about shades of beige and earth-colours - lovely as these are!
The four brightly coloured wee swatches shown here are also plant-dyed by Culross Yarns. Experienced dyers can conjure up a rainbow in their cauldrons.
When I see these exciting colours I want to play with them to create joyful friezes of flowers or repeating patterns on a light neutral background.
